Why join the JustSpace Alliance?
The JustSpace Alliance was formed with the intent of helping grow a vibrant community of people working and thinking about ethical, inclusive futures in space. Ideally, the existence of JustSpace and its work facilitates cross-disciplinary collaborations across the boundaries of discipline and identity (including nationality, immigration status, race, sexual orientation, education, disability, etc) that usually keep such work siloed, while also fostering a space for people to bring their full selves into these conversations that shape our future.
There is clear hunger for more engagement around space futures for all; Currently, many of these conversations happen on social media (e.g. Twitter), or in the context of conferences or events (which are typically academic spaces). Casual workspaces do exist, but they are not typically open beyond the network of people who are already connected by knowing each other within the astronomy (or other academic discipline) community.
Towards this end, we have created an accessible membership structure to provide a space for the JustSpace community to grow.
How to join the JustSpace Alliance
Membership in the JustSpace Alliance consists of four simple requirements:
An application indicating interest and intent
Subscription to the JustSpace newsletter
Sliding scale subscription to the JustSpace Patreon or by other individual arrangement (please email contact@justspacealliance.org if you would like to explore non-Patreon options).
A commitment to abide by the JustSpace Alliance Code of Conduct, which govern all online and in-person JustSpace Alliance spaces
Who can join?
JustSpace Alliance membership is open to all space enthusiasts, whether or not they are professional in space sciences. No requirements are made on educational degrees or other qualifications, beyond a commitment to uphold JustSpace’s mission statement and the values articulated in the Code of Conduct.
What do I put on my application?
We’ve designed the application process to be as simple as possible, in the spirit of lowering the barriers to membership. At the same time, becoming a member of the JustSpace Alliance means that you are joining a community of people who have expressed shared values around their aspirations for space, and so it’s important that everyone who joins commits to upholding those values together, even when differences of opinion may arise.
On your application,we hope to learn more about you, why you want to join JustSpace, and whether there are specific things you would like to learn, gain, or participate in as part of JustSpace. You don’t need to write a book; a paragraph or two addressing the questions above will suffice.
What does it cost?
The JustSpace Alliance membership is not a transactional relationship, but rather is based on the concept of a gift economy. All members, regardless of financial contribution, receive the same level of access. Membership dues are managed by either supporting the JustSpace Patreon at a level that is comfortable for you, or by individual arrangement with JustSpace. No one will be turned away based on financial means.
What do I get as a JustSpace Alliance Member?
JustSpace Alliance members gain access to the public areas of the JustSpace Alliance Slack workspace. On Slack, you’ll be able to communicate and collaborate with others who share your interests, foster new connections, and share information about upcoming events.
Access to JustSpace online initiatives, such as virtual panels or similar events, are also included in membership. In the future, we hope to offer discounted attendance fees for in-person events such as conferences and other gatherings.
And when we make shirts or other swag, you’ll be the first to know!
